I think that Europe rather then Africa or any other civilization tried to colonize the world because the Europeans had a very closed mindset. The people in the other 6 continents besides Europe were not desperate for new lands and resources. The Europeans at that time were greedy, bloodthirsty and therefore there was a massive land grab following Columbus' discovery of the Americas. Thus, the rulers of Europe started the 500 year long period known as the colonization period.
